Evidence for spontaneous interlayer phase coherence in a bilayer quantum Hall exciton condensate

چکیده
Recent experimental work on the quantized Hall state at total filling factor nT 1⁄4 1 in bilayer 2D electron systems has revealed a number of striking phenomena, including a giant and sharply resonant enhancement of the interlayer tunneling conductance at zero bias. The tunneling enhancement is a compelling indicator of spontaneous interlayer phase coherence among the electrons in the system. Such phase coherence is perhaps the single most important attribute of the excitonic Bose condensate which describes this remarkable quantum Hall state. q 2003 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. Excitonic superfluid phase in Double Bilayer Graphene
Spatially indirect excitons can be created when an electron and a hole, confined to separate layers of a double quantum well system, bind to form a composite Boson[1, 2]. Because there is no recombination pathway such excitons are long lived making them accessible to transport studies. Moreover, the ability to independently tune both the intralayer charge density and interlayer electron-hole se...

We study the effect of the Chern-Simons gauge fields on the possible transition from two decoupled composite fermion metals to the interlayer coherent composite fermion state proposed by Alicea et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 256403 (2009)] in a symmetrically doped quantum Hall bilayer with total Landau level filling fraction νtot = 1. In this transition, interlayer Coulomb repulsion leads to exc...
متن کاملOrder parameter phase locking as a cause of a zero bias peak in the differential tunneling conductance of bilayers with electron - hole pairing
– In n− p bilayer systems an exotic phase-coherent state emerges due to Coulomb pairing of n-layer electrons with p-layer holes. Unlike Josephson junctions, the order parameter phase may be locked by matrix elements of interlayer tunneling in n−p bilayers. Here we show how the phase locking phenomenon specifies the response of the electron-hole condensate to interlayer voltages. In the absence ...
متن کاملClausius-Clapeyron relations for first-order phase transitions in bilayer quantum Hall systems
A bilayer system of two-dimensional electron gases in a perpendicular magnetic field exhibits rich phenomena. At total filling factor tot=1, as one increases the layer separation, the bilayer system goes from an interlayer-coherent exciton condensed state to an incoherent phase of, most likely, two decoupled compositefermion Fermi liquids. Many questions still remain as to the nature of the tra...
متن کاملTunneling current characteristics in bilayer quantum Hall systems
Weakly disordered bilayer quantum Hall systems at filling factor ν = 1 show spontaneous interlayer phase coherence if the layers are sufficiently close together. We study the collective modes in the system, the current-voltage characteristics and their evolution with an in-plane magnetic field in the phase-coherent regime.
